Ackerman var gennem hele livet en ihærdig samler indenfor det fantastiske og lod offentligheden få adgang til sin imponerende samling af film, bøger og kuriosa med relation til film, for eksempel [[Bela Lugosi]]s kappe fra filmen [[Dracula]].<br />

Som litterær agent repræsenterede Ackerman en række store forfattere indenfor science fiction, blandt andet Isaac Asimov, Ray Harryhousen samt de på hver sin vis kontroversielle Ed Wood og L. Ron Hubbard. Han var desuden redaktør af magasinet Famous Monsters in Filmland.<br />
<br />
Fornavnet Forrest blev ofte forkortet til en række variationer over "Forry" af fans og venner. Ackerman døde af hjertestop i december 2008.<br />
