Da han nåede skolealderen, blev han placeret i en skole for mentalt udviklingshæmmede – til trods for at hans handicap kun var fysisk. Senere blev han sendt på en sibirisk kostskole for børn med talevanskeligheder. Her gennemgik han syv operationer. Ingen af dem lykkedes.
